EDCOUCH-Matthew James Shaw was born on April 7, 1977, in Lansing, Michigan, and, with unexpected swiftness, departed this world on June 21, 2026. The news of his passing brings sorrow to the many lives he touched, and yet, in remembering Matthew, we are drawn to the warmth and richness he left in his wake.
Matthew lived each day with a vivacity that was impossible to ignore. He had a natural gift for embracing life’s journeys, whether he was welding with passionate artistry, tending to his beloved goats, or making cherished memories with his fiancée, Emily Russell. He delighted in the honest joys of everyday existence. The simplicity of a well-crafted metalwork or the gentle bleat of his animals spoke to his spirit as much as the laughter shared with those he held dear.
Among his traits, Matthew’s kind heart shone brightest. His hard-working spirit was a hallmark to all who knew him. He met each challenge with resilience, generosity, and humility. Above all, he was more than just a son, a friend, or a brother he was that rare soul who managed to become a brother to all his friends. Matthew’s embrace drew you in, and his steadfast loyalty held you close.
Surviving him are his beloved fiancée Emily Russell and his devoted sister Heather Shaw, both of whom carry forward the best of Matthew in memory and in heart. He leaves behind a vast network of friends and acquaintances forever changed by his kindness, his wit, and the unfaltering support he offered them.
Matthew’s absence will be deeply felt, but the tapestry of stories, laughter, and lessons he wove into the lives around him will remain indelible. He taught us the value of finding joy in small things, the strength in quiet perseverance, and the enduring comfort of connection.
As we gather to remember him, we do so with gratitude for the time, however brief, that we were privileged to walk alongside such a remarkable man.
As per Matthew's wishes he will be cremated at a later date.
