SANTA ROSA- Maria Sulema Olivarez, born on June 9, 1947, in Santa Rosa, Texas, passed away on June 20, 2026, surrounded by the familiar sights and sounds of her beloved hometown. Her life, which began and ended in Santa Rosa, Surrounded by her loving family.
Maria’s journey was marked by deep and enduring relationships. She was the cherished daughter of Julian Olivarez, Sr. and Belia Hinojosa Olivarez, who preceded her in death and whose memory she held close throughout her life. Maria also carried the legacy of her siblings Viola Rincon, Alicia Garza, Petra Olivarez, and Nilda Olivarez. The bonds among them shaped Maria’s sense of loyalty, compassion, and resilience.
Moments with Maria were often punctuated by the aroma of home-cooked meals and the warmth of shared coffee with her brother Ralph; together, they whiled away hours enjoying Spanish soap operas, laughter, and conversation mingling in the air. Her love extended beyond her family to her friends and the feathered visitors to her yard, to books and crosswords, to nimble fingers busy with arts and crafts. She delighted in long walks by the canal at her house and found a special joy walking along the beach, hand-in-hand with her grandchildren, collecting seashells each one a memory gathered from the endless edge of the sea.
What truly set Maria apart was her unwavering work ethic and her love for life’s simplest, most profound pleasures. To those who knew her, Maria was the heartbeat of any gathering, happiest when her hands were in the earth, coaxing beauty from her garden, or tending tenderly to her cats. The rhythm of her days was marked by the watering of plants under the Texas sun, gentle bird watching on her porch, and music in the background that seemed to narrate her life’s moments.
Those left to honor Maria’s memory are many. Her children, Eliseo Olivarez, Rolando Olivarez and Velia Rolph. She leaves behind a loving legacy through her 8 grandchildren, 1 great grandson; siblings, Francis Torres, Rosalinda Ramirez, Maria Lucia Castillo, Alberto Olivarez, Rafael Olivarez, Julian Olivarez, Jr., Alejandro Olivarez and numerous nieces and nephews all of whom find comfort in the warmth of her memory and the unending support she offered each of them.
