EDCOUCH - It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Maria Angela “Chala” Cantu, a beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and wife, who left us peacefully on May 12, 2025, at the age of 77. Maria was born on November 29, 1947 in Littlefield, Texas and spent her life as a dedicated housewife, nurturing her family with love and warmth.
Maria was a gifted cook, bringing joy to her family, especially during the holidays when her kitchen filled with the delightful aromas of her special dishes. Her home was a haven for family gatherings, where her loving spirit and generous heart made every occasion memorable. She cherished those moments surrounded by her dear ones, especially her grandchildren, whom she adored caring for with unconditional love.
An avid fan of TV game shows, Maria found joy in the simplest pleasures of life, including her cherished morning coffee and the satisfaction of completing word searches. Her warmth and compassion touched everyone she met, and her legacy will live on in the hearts of those she loved.
Maria is preceded in death by parents Felipe and Leonor Perez and her siblings Vicente Perez, Marcelino Perez, David Perez, Maria Guerrero, Juana Perez, and Guadalupe Luna.
Maria is survived by her devoted husband, Jose Cantu, her loving children Lucinda Almazan, Julia Cantu, Rolando Cantu and Roel Cantu, Maria is also survived by 10 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren as well as her beloved siblings; Nicolas Perez, Santos Rodriguez, and Natividad Guerrero. Left to cherish her memory are also her nieces and nephews.
Family and friends will gather on Wednesday, May 14, 2025 from 1:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. with a rosary at 7:30 p.m. at Serenity Funeral Chapel in Edcouch. Funeral Mass will be on Thursday, May 15, 2025 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Theresa of the Infant Jesus Catholic church located at 200 Salazar Street Edcouch, Texas 78538. Interment will follow at Sacred Park Cemetery in Mercedes.
Maria's spirit will forever remain in the hearts of her family and friends, as we hold close the cherished memories of her love and laughter. She will be greatly missed but lovingly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
